Outcomes

of the 17th international specialized exhibition

EXPODREV

On September 8-11, 2015 the 17th international specialized exhibition EXPODREV took place in Krasnoyarsk. According to experts, the project plays a major role in the development of the forest industry in the region.

EXPODREV. Objective view

At the opening ceremony of EXPODREV exhibition, Yelena Vavilova, Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Krasnoyarsk Region, noted that today the forest industry in the region is dynamic in development and is attractive for investors resulting in the increase of woodworking investments by 67% amounting to about 2.5 billion Rubles. “Thereby significance of EXPODREV – the largest specialized exhibition beyond the Urals - cannot be overemphasized as this is a place where investors can learn about latest developments and purchase equipment and machinery both for large production facilities and for small enterprises,” said the Minister.

According to the Minister, in contrast to the past exhibitions when the number of international exhibitors has steadily risen, there is a new trend in the forest industry, which became apparent at EXPODREV 2015 – Russian manufacturers have significantly strengthened their position. “Import substitution announced by the Russian Federation Government provides new prospects of forest industry development in the country and the region. It is particularly reflected in EXPODREV 2015 trade show as the number of participants, especially national manufacturers, has increased considerably. It is pleasant to note that their products in a specific segment are competitive with foreign counterparts not only on price but on quality as well, and what’s the main, t is affordable for our small and medium enterprises,” highlighted Yelena Vavilova. “Apart from traditional reputable technologies, Russian manufacturers present at the exhibition high-technology innovative equipment for the processing of low –value wood species at minimum expense.”

This is also stated by foreign experts. According to Michael Bartos, Project Manager at Deutsche Messe AG, EXPODREV is one of the most important forest projects as Siberia is the place where the main woodworking resources are concentrated. Therefore, it is necessary to attract to Krasnoyarsk more specialists.

At the same time, forest industry of Russia and Krasnoyarsk region in particular is a subject of interest to foreign companies. Bernd Hones, Head of the Germany Trade and Invest Bureau in Moscow says, “This May I attended an international trade show LIGNA in Hannover, which comprised a conference dedicated to Russian forest market. I can say that it is very attractive for foreign companies. The demand for the Russian forest and woodworking products is going up. Thus, in Europe prices for Russian forest products have fallen by 27% during last 15 months. However Russian entrepreneurs have got the same amount in Rubles as before.”

According to Mr. Hones, forest market of the Krasnoyarsk region is particularly promising, and the number one factor affecting here is a railway enabling the transportation of wood or final products. “According to some reports, about 6 000 people work in forest industry. That is a very high figure, which is the indication of the industry development. However the level of automation is quite low at enterprises. On the one hand, there is a wide scope of opportunities for foreign companies to propose some innovative developments. On the other hand, current political and economic conditions have a strong impact on that. German export to Russia is predicted to break down by 30 %, yet the German companies have always been the most active investors. In 2013, they invested more than the USA, China, Japan, France, Great Britain and Italy, combined,” concluded the expert. “That is why such projects like EXPODREV are very important for the industry as it is here where innovations and advanced technologies are.”

Kai Varrelmann, Director at Deutsche Messe AG, also speaks about the significance of EXPODREV trade show: “At the moment we are carrying out the conception of woodworking trade shows network, which has already included Germany, Mexico, South Africa, China, and now Russia represented by Krasnoyarsk project EXPODREV. Friendly environment, professionalism of the organizers and government support ensure exhibitors confidence. It is essential for those companies that want to evolve professionally to be present at this market for the region has the huge investment potential. During the trade show a meeting on investment project was arranged where we were told about different projects including those requiring investors to contribute financially up to 25 million Euros! This is a very powerful message to foreign companies implying that they are welcome here. At the trade show they can meet with investment projects supervisors.”

In spite of the current economic situation, EXPODREV is a dynamic event. Next year the exhibition is to reach a new level. Sergei Sobolev, Director General of Krasnoyarsk Fair Exhibition Company, said, “Next EXPODREV trade show will surprise participants and visitors with a new project. Not far from Krasnoyarsk, in 15-20 kilometers, together with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Krasnoyarsk Region we organize a site for demonstration of heavy forestry equipment in action. This is unprecedented project over the whole territory of Urals, Siberia and Far East.”

EXPODREV 2015: exposition, participants, visitors

In 2015, 112 companies from 15 countries took part in the exhibition with 35 international exhibitors among them from Germany, Sweden, Finland, Japan, Austria, Slovenia, the USA, Belarus, China, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Switzerland and Latvia. An exposition occupied two large halls and outdoor space of 6 850 sqm.

During four days 2 487 people have attended the exhibition (according to the official registration data). The guests have come from 18 cities and regions of Russia as well as from foreign countries.

The exposition comprised all sections: logging, sawmilling, woodworking, forest protection and restoration, lumber for any purposes: from small construction to fitting out large factories. Among the new developments – equipment for 30-seconds integrated processing of logs, wood X-ray and scanners for sawmilling electronic control, Swedish equipment for working in harsh climat conditions, cosmetic processing of wood for decreasing reject rate, Austrian bio fuel boiler plants, innovative diamond tools and many other.

Toivo Kukk, Sales Director at TORREC Oy (Finland/Russia):

– We brought here new and very promising wood waste management technology. It enables to use almost all wastes with quality output – bio-coal pellets. Interestingly, they are moisture-proof and can be transported in gondola cars like coal. This is comparatively new technology in the world including in Russia. It became available about five years ago. Russia is the best market for such kind of products. There is an enormous interest in this technology, and here, at the exhibition, we present the final product. We have already had preliminary agreements but at the moment it is too early to talk about real cooperation. An exhibition is primarily an image-building event, and our main goal is to display the new product at the real ground, which we have successfully fulfilled. We are certainly going to participate in the next year show as the region is very attractive for us; there is a lot of wood here and yet more wood wastes. I’d like to notice that the exhibition is well-organized. I have been taking part in many trade shows in Russia, and EXPODREV is one the best.

In fact, it is not the first year the topic of bio energy comes to the fore. Nikolai Bugayenko, President of Eastern-Siberian Association of biotechnological clusters, noticed that the topic of bio energy and bio technology development in the Krasnoyarsk region has been actively discussed for 15 years. And if 15 years ago this topic was irrelevant, today we are witnessing that business is being actively engaged in the processes for wastes became a great inconvenience, and, furthermore, they can bring large profit.

Maksim Shornikov, Sales Manager at Ekodrev-Tver:

– We have participated in EXPODREV trade show for several times. Our main offer is equipment for woodworkers enabling to solve wood waste management problems. In spite of the volatile economic environment, the demand and interest in our products are quite high. That is why we will likely come to the exhibition next year as such an image-building event is very important for our company.

An outdoor exposition attracted considerable interest of visitors where over 20 units of specialized equipment: sawmilling equipment, boiler plants, loaders, vehicles for timber transportation, hydraulic manipulators, etc.

Nikita Shcherbakov, Specialist of Marketing and Sales Department at Altaysky Special Engineering Factory PROGRESS (Barnaul):

– This is our first participation in this exhibition. We decided to display here our machinery - chocker skidder for the lumber industry. This is well-known and high-quality equipment, which is more budget friendly than foreign counterparts. Those who worked with the machinery said that they hadn’t seen anything better than that. At an exhibition we appreciate face-to-face communication with our potential customers and partners that is why we are going to participate in the next EXPODREV trade show in 2016.

EXPODREV 2015: business programme

The business programme of the exhibition included a number of activities dedicated to the topical issues relevant to the industry. One of the topics to discuss was the bio energy development. At a conference “Environment-oriented, ecological and economic aspects of bio energy” participants and experts discussed current situation and prospects of the internal market of renewable resources, issues of lumber waste processing; appreciated the experience of development of the national bio energy mechanical engineering.

Yuriy Panchuk, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Krasnoyarsk Region, mentioned in his welcoming speech that lumber and logging waste processing and bio energy development at large is one of the priorities in the work of the Ministry of the Natural Resources and Ecology of the Krasnoyarsk Region. “Large volumes of wood wastes are accumulated in the Krasnoyarsk region. For instance, about 628 thousand cu m of wastes is produced in the Boguchansky district, 640 thousand cu m – in Kezhemsky district, 224 thousand cu m in Evenkiysky district. That involves a grave risk of fire and range of environmental challenges,” said the Deputy Minister.

According to the experts, in those forest districts where substantial volume of wastes is accumulated there are only coal boiler plants in operation while the change-over to wood fuel can solve two serious problems at once: partial processing of wood wastes and energy tax reduction in the districts.

Rüdiger Staib, representative of KWF (Center of competences in forest industry, Germany), shared the experience in bio energy development in Central Europe with Russian colleagues. He told that in Germany using of wood fuel as source of renewable energy is one of the priority tasks at the country level. Mr. Staib also mentioned that German bio energy specialists face the challenge of wood wastes shortage because of level-down of wood processing standards at enterprises.

An issue of staff training was also on the agenda. At a conference the was convergence of views that quality staff training for such a relatively new industry requires networking of professional educational institutions, which are to integrate science, education, and operating experience. That will allow training competitive specialists.

“During 15 years we have been actively discussing the topic of bio energy and bio technology development in the Krasnoyarsk region. And if 15 years ago this topic was irrelevant, today we are witnessing that business is being actively engaged in the processes for wastes became a great inconvenience, and, furthermore, they can bring large profit. Today the issue is to create a bio-fuel cluster for the integration of bio energy enterprises. In this case all the concerned parties will be able to get benefit from the structured organization oriented to the manufacturing and realization of renewable energy sources,” noticed Nikolai Bugayenko, President of Eastern-Siberian Association of biotechnological clusters.

Moreover, during EXPODREV 2015 at the Meeting of the Section of Forest and Industry Complex Small and Medium-sized Business Enterprises of the Siberian Accord Interregional Association Coordination Board in Forest Industry and Renewable Natural Resources there was discussion of the creation of favorable conditions for the implementation of the projects of small and medium-sized enterprises in the timber industry.

In fact, small and medium-sized enterprises occupy a significant share in the timber industry sector providing jobs for over 6 000 people, harvesting one third of timber and manufacturing more than half volume of lumber in the region. “We work intensively with entrepreneurs and systematically solve problems they face. Much has been achieved due to our cooperation. The Forest Code was amended to enable entrepreneurs to make short-term contracts on woodland sale and purchase what will allow solving the problem of wood shortage,” highlighted Yuriy Panchuk, Deputy Minister of Natural resources and Ecology of the Krasnoyarsk region.

According to participants of the meeting, today a major obstacle to the development of small and medium-size enterprises is low infrastructure layer resulting in lumber delivery, transportation and warehousing expenses. The experts proposed several options for settlement these issues. First, representatives of small and medium-sized should organize cooperatives in order to create an integrated chain if all manufacturing processes: from harvesting to realization of final products. For example, the entrepreneurs will be able to supply raw materials and final products under large contracts.

Furthermore, a project on the creation of unified trading platform in the Internet is being developed at the moment, which is to contain the information on market channels in Russia and other countries, various chains and logistic structures of supply and realization of final products. Entrepreneurs’ cooperatives will be able to see inquiries for products supply and implement joint contracts what, according to specialists, will be mutually benefit.

“In the Krasnoyarsk region a serious work on support and development of small and medium-sized business is being carried out. Upon EXPODREV in 2014, a great amount of work has been done. Due to the Ministry of the Natural Resources and Ecology the main forms of support for small and medium-sized entrepreneurship are created, and at the present time we are ready to transmit our experience to Siberian regions. Today we discussed the issues of final products promotion to markets. Suggestions made on-site will enable the entrepreneurs to promote their products effectively. This is one more significant step to the creation of the environment for small and medium-sized business development in the forest sector on the territory of the region,” said Valery Malanin, Head of the Section of Forest and Industry Complex Small and Medium-sized Business Enterprises; President of the Interregional public organization of Siberian entrepreneurs “Siberia without boundaries”

Within the EXPODREV’s business programme the following activities were carried out: the Meeting of the Section in staff training of the Siberian Accord Interregional Association Coordination Board in forest industry and renewable natural resources, round tables “Enhancement of forest exploitation: significance, real situation, prospects”, “Implementation of innovative technologies at forestry works”, “Issues of forestry management at wood land holdings in the Krasnoyarsk Region. The ways out”, “Measures to increase efficiency of forestry management in fight against forest fires”. A seminar “Woodworking enterprise accounting from raw materials to financial results” took place as well.

Let me greet the participants and guests of Expodrev 2015 exhibition!

This exhibition is dedicated to the most sensitive issues. Scientists from all countries are concerned with the health of forests that suffer from human activities. Our forest is our most precious national asset, which has a huge hygienic and healthful meaning. The forests are called “green lungs” of the planet. They have a priceless aesthetic value as well. All this is important for human life, activities and health.

Specialists of our Institute face a task to provide scientific support for forest management, which is aimed to multiplying and rational use of Siberian forests - priceless national treasure. The Institute conducts researches with the results to be implemented in the forestry. They particularly connected with the protection of forests from fire, injurious insect and diseases; with forest protection measures, industrial forest exploitation control, and others.

I hope that the Expodrev 2015 exhibition will provide an opportunity to see new technologies and equipment for forest protection and regeneration, and a business programme will provide a ground for the discussion of pressing issues for the timber industry.

I wish everyone valuable contacts and meetings with interesting people, important and useful work at the Expodrev 2015 exhibition.

Dear participants and guests of ExpoDrev Russia 2015!

On behalf of one of the largest German exhibition organizers, Deutsche Messe, I am happy to welcome all participants and guests of ExpoDrev Russia 2015.

For more than 60 years Deutsche Messe has been organizing b2b-exhibitions attended by millions of professionals from all over the world. In 2014 we decided to add a new project in Deutsche Messe’s portfolio: the ExpoDrev Russia in Krasnoyarsk for woodworking and furniture manufacturing industries.

Deutsche Messe’s Russian subsidiary, OOO Deutsche Messe RUS, and Krasnoyarsk Fair Exhibition Company (KFEC) co-organize the ExpoDrev Russia trade fair for Siberia’s forest, timber and woodworking industries for the second time in 2015.

Since its debut in 1999, ExpoDrev Russia has become the leading tradeshow for Siberia’s wood-based industries and the marketing platform of choice for Russian and international technology providers.

Deutsche Messe is happy and proud to bring especially international exhibitors and associations to Siberia and in doing so, being an integral part of the success of the event. ExpoDrev Russia features the full range of wood processing systems, from harvesting and primary timber processing machines to high-quality woodworking and furniture manufacturing plant and tools.

Accordingly, timber harvesting and processing constitute a big part of the local economy, which offers excellent future potential for technology providers, not least because Russia’s wood-based industries, particularly in the country’s well forested regions, are in need of modernization to expand their local processing capacity and increase the share of local value added.

Renowned Russian and international manufacturers of woodworking machineries and associations will participate in the exhibition. They will present their recent developments, inform about new trends and show all ranges of technologies in this sector.

I am confident that ExpoDrev Russia 2015 will give all exhibitors and visitors excellent opportunities to develop their business in the prospering Russian woodworking industry and market.

I wish all the participants and guests success and fruitful work!

ExpoDrev Russia (8–11 September 2015) End-of-show report

ExpoDrev: Russia’s leading forestry trade fair at the heart of the most forested Region

Hannover/Krasnoyarsk. The 17th edition of ExpoDrev Russia, Russia’s most important event for the forestry industry, ran from 8 to 11 September 2015 at the Siberia International Exhibition and Business Center in Krasnoyarsk. ExpoDrev Russia was organized by OOO Deutsche Messe RUS, Deutsche Messe’s subsidiary in Russia, and the exhibition company Krasnoyarsk Fair.

Despite the difficult economic situation in Russia, more than 120 domestic and foreign companies presented new products and technologies at ExpoDrev. The event was supported by the Krasnoyarsk region’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the city government of Krasnoyarsk, central Siberia’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Krasnoyarsk’s regional forest workers union, the trade association Drevmash, and the German Engineering Federation (VDMA).

Elena Vavilova, Krasnoyarsk’s minister of natural resources and environment, underscored at the ExpoDrev opening ceremony that the region’s forest industry is developing dynamically and is thus attractive to investors – investment in wood processing in the first half of 2015 increased by 67 percent, reaching 2.5 billion rubles. “For this reason one cannot overemphasize ExpoDrev’s importance as Ural’s leading forestry fair. This is where investors experience new developments; this is where both large enterprises and small businesses purchase equipment and machinery.”

More than 120 companies from Austria, Belarus, China, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Latvia, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, Turkey, and the United States participated in ExpoDrev on a display area of 7,000 square meters, while approximately 2,500 industry professionals attended the fair. Exhibitors at ExpoDrev Russia represented all sectors of the industry, from logging, sawmilling, wood processing and protection to forest reproduction, all-purpose timber, small construction sites and plant equipment. Well-known exhibitors included Fuji Seisakusho Ltd, C. Gunnarssons Verkstads AB, EWD – The SawLine Company (Esterer WD GmbH), Pawert – SPM AG, Grand Forest AB, Polytechnik Luft – und Feuerungstechnik GmbH, Valon Kone (VK), WoodEye AB, Maykop Machinebuilding Plant, ZAO “Podyemnye machiny”, and Tooling and Machining Plant TERMIT. New products ranged from 30-second complex log-processing and a wood X-ray/scanner to electronic sawmill-control and harsh-weather equipment to decorative wood treatment and waste reduction. Under the leadership of the Krasnojarsk region, seven investment projects worth more than €25 million were presented at the fair.

One of the main topics at ExpoDrev’s business program was bioenergy development. The conference “Natural, ecological and economical aspects of bioenergy” featured experts discussing the current situation as well as further prospects for renewable resources and recycling lumber waste; a proposal to development a national bioenergy market was applauded. In his welcoming speech, Yuri Panchuk, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology, Krasnoyarsk Region, noted that recycling sawmill waste, logging and bioenergy development are among his priorities: “The Krasnoyarsk region accumulates huge amounts of wood waste, which results in serious risk of forest fires and numerous environmental problems.” Rüdiger Staib, a member of Germany’s Center for Forestry Competence (KWF), talked about central European bioenergy development, noting that in Germany, using wood fuel as a source of renewable energy is a priority at the state level.

ExpoDrev Russia also hosted a meeting for the interregional association Sibirskoye soglashenie’s department of staff training as well as roundtables on such topics as “Forestry enhancement: importance, reality, perspectives”, “Using innovative technologies in forestry operations”, “Managing leased forests in the Krasnoyarsk region: problems and solutions”, “Ways to improve forest-management efficiency in order to preserve and protect forests.” The seminar “Accounting for wood processing companies – from raw material to financial results” rounded out the program.

In 2016 ExpoDrev Russia will introduce a new platform that shows forestry machinery in action. This is the result of a meeting at this year’s event where the ExpoDrev organizers, Germany’s advisory board for forestry and forestry technology (KWF), and managers from Divnogorsk Forestry Technical College decided as part of an “ExpoDrev Day” to stage a live demonstration area at the college for forestry machinery such as loaders, hydraulic cranes, harvesters, and forwarders. According to Sergey Sobolev, director general of Krasnoyarsk Fair, the new concept is unique in the Urals, Siberia and the Far East.

ExpoDrev Russia 2016 will run from 6 to 9 September at the Siberia International Exhibition and Business Center in Krasnoyarsk.
